I am a primary care internal medicine physician. I worked five years as a commissioned officer with the US Public Health Service on two of Native American reservations and a year with the Federal Bureau of Prisons. I then went into private practice for 21 years in Silverton, OR. With the recent changes in healthcare I decided to join the Legacy Medical Group to adjust to the needs of the future.
I enjoy patients from their late teens to over 100. I have a broad experience and background in both clinic and hospital medicine. At this time, I am choosing to focus on clinic medicine only. I have been focused on the care of diabetes mellitus for my whole career, as well as the issues of cardivascular disease in general. I am a generalist ""physician for adults"" and enjoy the many different aspects of medicine.
My philosphy is straight forward; when you have a good primary care physician, with easy access to care and we have a good relationship, you will find that most of your problems can be handled as an outpatient. Your health and life depend on you having someone you can talk to and be heard by.
I believe that good public health is the primary basis for all of healthcare. Public health comes in many forms, but over my career I have become concerned about a form of public health I call spiritual public health. I believe each of us is continuously growing and developing in many ways throughout our lives. My mid-life work has taught me the value and importance of developing our souls. I believe every stage of life has a spiritual journey which needs development and expression. To the extent we are successful at this development, we will have good spiritual public health.
I was born in 1955, I have been married to my wife Deborah since 1978. We have two adult children, our daughter Ariel, an independent film editor in Los Angeles and our son Benjamin, who works with homeless people in Los Angeles. My family has lived for nearly 200 years in the Willamette Valley, and I live on the old family farm out in St. Louis, Oregon just outside of Woodburn, where many generations of my family have been born, raised, and passed on.
I have had many interests over the years. Currently, I enjoy gardening, riding my tractor, trimming trees, doing some artwork in the form of painting, working on music (harmonica, guitar, banjo, piano and voice), studying dreams, teaching Sunday School, a little photography and of course I enjoy hunting and backpacking immensely.
