Biography

Howard W. Sill, MD Phd RPVI

I have studied practically my whole life to become the best doctor I can be. Growing up in central Pennsylvania, I knew from an early age that I wanted to understand and fix people’s medical problems.

I studied biology then physiology at Penn State University earning Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral degrees. My doctoral research was on the understanding of the behavior and diseases of blood vessels, something that I now focus on extensively. I had broad medical interests when I went to the University of Pittsburgh Medical School which lead me to family medicine training at the University of Tennessee. I practiced as a full spectrum family physician for five years in Auburn, Washington.

Toward the end of my family medicine training, however, I was exposed to an innovative field of medicine, vascular and interventional radiology. As time went by, I realized this was my calling. So I embarked on another journey of learning. An exciting fellowship opportunity for interdisciplinary training in vascular medicine presented itself in Charleston, West Virginia. Vascular medicine is the medical specialty that studies diseases of the circulatory system including arteries, veins and lymphatics. I learned advanced endovascular techniques for treating peripheral artery disease, venous thrombosis and insufficiency, renovascular hypertension, carotid stenosis and aortic aneurysms. I went on to finish a second residency in diagnostic radiology at the University of Washington in Seattle. Finally, I came full circle to interventional radiology fellowship at Indiana University where I acquired additional skillsets such as interventional oncology to allow me to perform minimally-invasive, image-guided treatments in nearly every organ system in the body.

In tandem with professional growth, I also developed various personal outdoor interests which has made the Pacific Northwest the perfect place for me. Learning whitewater kayaking during graduate school, mountain biking during family medicine residency, and paragliding during radiology residency were just a few of many outdoor avocations that I developed and enjoy to this
