Artificial Corneal Transplant
In 1992, an industrial accident robbed Ed Partyka of his eyesight. Now almost 17 years later, Neda Shamie, M.D., a corneal and anterior segment surgeon from Devers Eye Institute at Legacy Good Samaritan Medical Center, has restored Partyka's sight with the first artificial corneal transplant in Oregon.
In a healthy eye, the cornea acts as a transparent window. In Partyka's case, his chemical burn caused severe scarring of the cornea, limiting his ability to see through the "window." After years of multiple surgeries unable to restore his functional vision, he couldn't wait to get his first good look at the eye chart. more +
