Ten tips for summer safety
Don't let summer time become accident time! These tips from Legacy's safety experts were featured in the June issue of Metro Parent.
Why not print this PDF of the ten tips and post on your refrigerator, as a reminder of good safety practices?
On the water
1. Actively supervise young children in and around ALL open bodies of water, including pools, spas, bathtubs and even buckets.
2. Teach children to wear a snug-fitting life-jacket on boats and around open bodies of water -- and model good practice by wearing one yourself.
On wheels
3. Teach children to wear a helmet on bikes, skates, skateboards and scooters -- and model good practice by wearing one yourself.
4. Learn how to properly fit your child's helmet and how to adjust it if it loosens.
At play
5. Provide a safe home environment by outfitting windows with window stops and/or window guards, stairs with safety gates, furniture and TVs with anti-tip strapping and the rest of the home with the appropriate child safety devices.
6. Actively supervise young children on playgrounds and make sure playgrounds have wood chips or other cushiony surfaces under play structures.
On the road
7. Always wear your seat belt and attend a car safety seat check-up event to make sure all children are safely restrained for every ride. 8. Never leave children alone in the car, even for a moment.
On foot
9. Make sure children under 10 years of age cross the street only with an adult.
10. Teach children to cross the street at corners, first looking left, right, then left again -- and model good practice by doing so yourself.
