Timed Urine Collection Handling

Timed urine specimens are collected in a specially prepared urine collection container that may require a special preservative. Consult Patient Instructions for Collecting a Timed Urine Sample (24, 48, 72 hours) for instructions for collection, handling and transportation of timed urine specimens or see individual tests in the Test Table for specific tests.

  1. Add preservatives at start of collection.
    1. For six hour collections, add 1/4 amount of preservative.
    2. For a 12 hour collection add 1/2 amount of preservative.
    3. For children between 6-12 years, add 1/4 amount of preservative.
    4. For children under 6 years, add 1/10 amount of preservative.
    5. 10 g Boric Acid = 4 tablets.
    6. For volumes over 2 liters, add 2 tablets per additional liter.
  2. If a Random Sample is submitted instead of a 24-hour sample, refrigeration is the preservative requested.
  3. Multiple tests which require different preservatives necessitate separate 24-hour collections.
  4. For tests requiring specific pH: Measure and adjust pH, if necessary, before aliquoting and freezing. Please include pH level on the requisition.
  5. Contact Client Services at (503) 413-1234 or Toll Free 1-877-270-5566 for alternate preservatives.
