Diversity at Legacy Health

Legacy Health places a high priority on building a culture that values diversity in how we work with each other, how we deliver care, how we partner with our community and how we do business. Diversity is a moral, social and business imperative for us.

We believe that if we do the right thing for our employees, our patients and our communities, then we are doing the right thing for our business.

The elements of diversity

We recognize that diversity means something different to everyone. To us, diversity has three elements:

Representation

  • Our workforce represents the growing diversity of the communities we serve, and of our world.

Inclusiveness

  • We create a welcoming and inclusive environment for our employees, patients and visitors and we embrace our differences and similarities.
  • Our patients receive the same level of care and access to services, without regard and irrespective of age, race, ethnicity, lifestyle, gender, religion, sexual orientation, education, disability, socioeconomic background or any other attribute.

Cultural competence

  • We deliver care in a way that is sensitive to and respectful of the cultural background of our patients and employees.
  • We recognize that social injustice and health inequities exist in our communities, and we work toward improving access to quality health care for everyone.

Our diversity framework

Our goal is that Legacy Health will be a diverse, culturally competent organization. Our Diversity Framework sets goals in four key areas:

  • Representation of our workforce at all levels to better reflect the diversity of our patients and service areas
  • An expanded diversity in our leadership team
  • Supporting and reflecting the diversity of our community
  • Cultural competence in how we provide care to our patients

Our guiding behaviors

Social responsibility and respect for others are two of Legacy's core commitments as a Preferred Employer. Our guiding behaviors are described here:

Our care for patients

Legacy's Statement of Patient Rights and Responsibilities documents the fact that our patients have the right to receive care "based on medical need, without regard to race, color, creed, national origin, sexual orientation or the nature of the source of payment for care." We have a strong commitment to health care for the uninsured.

All Legacy staff are expected to provide considerate and respectful care, meeting the cultural, spiritual, emotional, lifestyle, and personal dignity needs of individual patients and their families. We believe that our patients have the right to be informed in a manner and format tailored to the patient's age, language, and ability to understand. To this end, we provide free translation services in nearly 100 different languages as well as TTY phone systems in our facilities. Legacy facilitates the use of communication devices brought in or requested by patients throughout the system and allows both companion and guide dogs in the environment once specific criteria are met.

Our recruitment efforts

We proactively recruit from career fairs, community events, and innovative pipeline programs and partnerships that focus on minorities, women and people with disabilities. We believe that a balanced portfolio of employees will benefit our organization by providing diverse ideas and ways of thinking.

Our work in the community

Legacy is proud of its active and generous community involvement, including support of a wide variety of groups dedicated to diversity.

We also support various youth and senior programs through employee volunteerism, donation of office space, and funding for staff and equipment.

Our work with vendors

Legacy seeks to expand its relationships with minority-owned businesses, and we welcome innovative ideas and programs that provide us with the opportunity to do so. We're proud to have been recognized by the National Association of Minority Contractors as the private organization that provided the most exceptional support to Oregon minority contractors in 2009.
