Your hospital care

We want your hospital stay to be as comfortable as possible. Here's some information that may help.

Caregiver services

Legacy Caregiver Services offers the following to family caregivers: referral to trained caregivers, caregiver education, respite worker training, and adult day-care for older adults with memory loss or confusion. For more information contact us at 503-413-7706 or emailing caregiver@lhs.org.

Family-centered care

Legacy's hospitals truly focus on the family, emphasizing patient and family involvement in everything we do. We are supportive of family members participating in your care, if you desire. Their increased awareness of your need for rest, support and encouragement to exercise, and their willingness to help with daily activities and responsibilities will be a great benefit. Your nurse will help your family gain the skills and confidence necessary to help with your recovery.

For your protection

You will notice that your caregiver wears gloves, gown, mask or protective eyewear when performing some of your care. These items are for your safety and that of your caregiver as required by Occupational Safety and Health Administration Standards and hospital policy.

We encourage our patients to be proactive in their own care. We expect all caregivers who have physical contact with their patients to wash their hands before and after contact. If you do not see this happening, remember: It's OK to Ask.

Health information

Legacy offers health information to the community through its Community Health Information Centers at our Good Samaritan, Emanuel, Meridian Park and Salmon Creek hospitals. The Centers are a resource for information on health and wellness topics such as diseases and conditions, treatment information, hospitalization and care giving. Please feel free to call or stop.

Nursing care

The registered nursing staff plays a key role in your care at the hospital. Legacy nursing staff are primarily registered nurses who are supported by licensed practical nurses and certified nursing assistants. They assess your needs and encourage you to become an active participant in your plan of care. Feel free to ask the nurses questions regarding your care while you are hospitalized.

Referrals

See Find a Provider if you need a physician referral, or call our referral specialists at 503-335-3500 or 360-487-3500 during business hours (8am - 4pm PST).

Social services and continuing care

Clinical Resource Coordinators are available to you and your family to address any concerns about your care after you leave the hospital. Just call the hospital operator and ask for Social Services. The Coordinators can help with:

  • Discharge planning assistance, including for patients who cannot immediately return home
  • Financial counseling related to discharge planning
  • Referrals to community resources
  • Referrals to nearby motels

Teaching programs/students

All Legacy hospitals are teaching institutions. Education programs are conducted throughout the hospital and may involve medical students, residents, nursing students and students in allied health professions. In some areas of this hospital, your care may involve persons who are in an academic program under the supervision of a qualified health professional. Feel free to discuss any concerns you may have with your doctor or nurse.

Translation services

Legacy has access to interpreters for nearly 100 languages, so if you feel more comfortable in a non-English language we may be able to provide an interpreter. Please notify the office staff that you need an interpreter as soon as you know the date and time of your visit. There is no charge to you for this service. Legacy provides information to staff on a number of different cultures and facilitates the needs and requests of patients and families within the limits of our resources whenever possible, such as language interpreters and TTY phones for hearing impaired.
