Selection and registration of prenatal education classes & tours

What classes to take

For optimal preparation, we recommend first time parents attend at least one class in each of the following categories:  Childbirth Preparation, Baby Care and Breastfeeding. In addition to the childbirth preparation classes, Dads/partners often comment on their increased confidence in parenting after attending both our baby care and breastfeeding classes.

When to register

To ensure best selection of class dates and locations, we suggest registering by the fourth month of your pregnancy. For those expecting multiples, you may want to register even earlier. The goal for all patients is to complete their classes at least a month before delivery.

Childbirth preparation

Childbirth Preparation
$65 for mom & support person
This course is highly recommended for all first time parents. We also encourage this choice over a Childbirth Refresher class if this is a first baby for either parent. You will gain a better understanding of the physical and emotional aspects of labor and birth, pain management, cesarean birth, the first hour of the baby's life and postpartum expectations. Learn comfort measures, skills for the support person and relaxation and breathing techniques. Whether you are interested in a medicated or non-medicated birth, this class will help you explore the benefits, alternatives and risks of your many options and assist you to best prepare for the birth you desire. This series is offered on a variety of evenings throughout all five Legacy hospitals.

Childbirth Intensive Weekend Seminar
$85 for mom & support person
This fast-paced weekend includes a condensed version of the information covered in our four or six-week childbirth preparation series. In this forum, there is less time for practicing comfort measures, relaxation and breathing techniques. If those topics are of particular interest to you, please consider taking a four or six week series. It is beneficial to do some reading on the labor and birth process prior to attending this class. Our large, auditorium style, classes are designed for 20 to 60 people. (There are smaller groups available at Salmon Creek and Mount Hood locations.) Offered monthly, Friday evening 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm and Saturday, 9:30 am - 4 pm. A $5 per person cafeteria coupon and all class materials are provided.

Childbirth Comprehensive Package
$135 for mom & support person
This is a package of our three most popular classes offered in 10-week series. (The price is the same if they are taken separately.) Childbirth Refresher
$40 for mom & support person
This class is for parents who have both attended previous birthing classes and wish to brush up on their knowledge of the birth experience. Topics include a comparison of first and subsequent pregnancies and births, an overview of labor, current birth options and pain management choices. We will review breathing and relaxation techniques and discuss tips for sibling preparation. Please note: If this is a first birth for either parent we recommend a full childbirth series as basic knowledge is assumed.

Cesarean Birth Preparation
$15 for mom & support person
This class is designed for those who have a cesarean birth scheduled or who have a higher chance of having that experience. Learn about preparation for surgery, the surgical birth experience, the important role of the partner and tips for recovery. Even though a cesarean birth is a surgery, we will focus on the choices involved in making it a family-centered experience and a beautiful birth-day!

Childbirth Preparation Español
