Trauma Nurses Talk Tough (TNTT) was developed in 1986 by three trauma nurses who wanted to put an end to the carnage they saw every day as a result of unnecessary injuries and deaths. Today, the wide-reaching impact of these programs has helped save countless lives through community education and advocacy.
Education
TNTT programs empower people of all ages to take control of the risks in their lives by teaching them simple ways of changing their behavior. These engaging, dynamic programs serve 56,000 each year in Oregon alone.
-
Court-Ordered Classes: Classes developed for drivers charged with DUII, unsafe driving and other risky behaviors.
-
Family Education Programs: Presentations help parents and their children learn healthy behaviors.
- Products: Order CDs and DVDs of various TNTT programs.
-
Resources for Parent: Tools to help you teach your teens safe, responsible driving habits.
-
School Programs: Presentations reduce unnecessary injury and death by teaching young people how avoid to control the risk in their lives.
Public Policy and Legislative Advocacy
Research shows that safety laws are the most effective way to change behavior. An important part of our injury prevention agenda is fighting for public policy that supports improved safety and injury prevention.
In the past two decades, the tireless advocacy of TTNT has influenced the Oregon state legislature and resulted in the passage of numerous laws. Examples of TNTT-supported legislation, now law, are:
- Oregon is the only state that requires kids under age 16 to wear helmets while on bicycles, scooters, skateboards and rollerblades.
- All motor vehicle operators and passengers must be properly secured with a safety belt or safety harness.
- All motorcycle riders must wear helmets.
- Children under age 18 are not allowed to ride in the beds of pickup trucks.
- Children must be restrained in a booster seat until age 8 and/or they are 4'9" tall.
