National Hospital Measures
Hospital Compare is a website created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) along with the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA) to report the quality of patient care provided by hospitals. The information on this website can be used by any adult needing hospital care. The website reports on quality measures that are used to evaluate how well hospitals are performing on recommended treatments for three medical conditions: heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgery and children's asthma. These conditions were chosen because they are among the most common and serious medical conditions seen in hospitals and they allow easy comparisons among healthcare organizations. The measures have gone through years of extensive testing by federal agencies to make sure they are valid and reliable for judging the quality of care hospitals provide.
