Skills, ECMO and dedication defeat H1N1
The H1N1 virus can severely affect the lungs, weakening a patient's ability to combat the disease. ECMO, or extra-corporeal membrane oxygenation, is a powerful weapon against H1N1 because it actually oxygenates the blood outside the body, bypassing the lungs so they can rest and heal.
No one can attest to the life-saving power of ECMO better than Jacquelyn Cordero. What she thought was a case of the sniffles quickly escalated into a critical case of H1N1. Learning of her plight, Legacy staffers began a massive effort to transport her from Medford to Portland so she could receive ECMO therapy before it was too late.
