Legacy's Safety and Injury Prevention Programs
Every year in Oregon, more children ages 1 to 14 die from preventable injuries than from all other childhood diseases combined. Our award-winning injury prevention and awareness programs will help you keep your kids and teens safe and sound.
Bike/skateboard helmet sales
Each year, Legacy provides more than 5,000 bicycle helmets for children and adults at a nominal or no fee, based on need. We also hold regular helmet clinics at which we sell helmets, adjust the fit and teach you how to wear them properly. Check the Classes & Events schedule for the helmet event nearest you.
Car safety seats
Installation: When properly installed, car safety seats are about 70% effective in reducing fatalities and hospitalization for children. Unfortunately, 7 out of 10 kids in car safety seats are not buckled in properly. This innovative program was developed at The Children's Hospital to improve the safety of children while they're riding in cars. See Classes & Events for a schedule of car safety seat clinics.
Recycling: Used car safety seats should never be reusedDue to wear and tear and the possibility of manufacturers' recalls on older seats. Instead, recycle your old seats free of charge at any of Legacy's car safety seat clinics. In addition, used seats may be dropped off (by appointment only) at one of two Legacy facilities. Please contact Tammy Franks, Child Passenger Safety Coordinator, at 503-413-4005 or tfranks@lhs.org to schedule a time and location.
Oregon Burn Center
The Center sends teams throughout the Northwest to teach parents and school-age children about the risk of burn injuries. They also have a program to help recovering pediatric burn patients re-enter the school system. Call 503-413-2398.
