Treatment options: surgery

  • Traditional Surgery: Removing part of the prostate or prostate gland and nearby tissue
  • Robotic Surgery: A very precise and less-invasive approach using the da Vinci® Surgical System
  • Cryosurgery: the use of extreme cold produced by liquid nitrogen or argon to destroy cancerous tissue

Treatment options: radiation therapy

  • Brachytherapy: Radioactive material is placed in the body in direct contact with the tumor

  • Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): The radiation beam is customized to match the patient's anatomy and the shape of the tumor

  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): Both the radiation beam and the amount of radiation are customized to the targeted area

  • Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery: the most precise targeting of radiation currently available

Other treatment options

  • Chemotherapy: Medication used to slow the growth of the cancer which has spread to other areas of the body

  • Hormonal therapy: Reducing male hormones causes most prostate cancer to shrink or regress

  • "Watchful Waiting:" Close monitoring, without active treatment, of early slow-growing cancer. This approach may be appropriate to avoid possible risks and side effects of other treatments, or when other serious medical conditions are present.
