Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the United States. The good news is that early detection and advanced technologies have dramatically improved the success rate of prostate cancer treatment.

At the Legacy Cancer Institute we offer leading edge treatments and are committed to finding the one that is best for you. We know that living with a diagnosis of cancer, and its management, can have a profound effect on your functional, emotional, social and spiritual well-being. That's why we offer a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to your care. That means we treat the whole person, because you have a life, not just a diagnosis.

Award-winning care

Legacy ranks among the nation's top cancer programs and has received multiple quality awards including the 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons' Commission (ACS) on Cancer. The ACS ranks Legacy's cancer program as one of the best in the nation.

Screening and Early Detection

Changes in screening recommendations can often be confusing. Don't worry, our expert physicians have sorted through the data for you. The Legacy Cancer Instituted continues to recommend screening for prostate cancer. It's important to understand that not all prostate cancer tumors need treatment and that options include simple monitoring. If your doctor recommends treatment for your cancer there are a range of possibilities to consider. Read more about Legacy's screening recommendations.

Treatment

Legacy Cancer Institute offers many options for treating prostate cancer, from precision radiation therapy to robotic-assisted surgery. Our remarkable team of physicians includes specialists in oncology, urology, radiation oncology and surgery.

Surgery

  • Traditional Surgery: Removing part of the prostate or the prostate gland and nearby tissue
  • Robotic Surgery: A very precise and less-invasive approach using the da Vinci® Surgical System. Learn more about robotic surgery.
  • Cryosurgery: the use of extreme cold produced by liquid nitrogen or argon to destroy cancerous tissue

Radiation therapy

  • Novalis® Shaped Beam Surgery: the most precise targeting of radiation currently available
  • Brachytherapy: Radioactive material is placed in the body in direct contact with the tumor.
  • Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT): The radiation beam is customized to match the patient's anatomy and the shape of the tumor.
  • Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT): Both the radiation beam and the amount of radiation are customized to the targeted area.

Active Surveillance

"Active Surveillance" is an approach for certain older men who have a limited amount of prostate cancer. Instead of receiving immediate treatment, patients are followed closely to see if and when the cancer grows or gets worse. Treatment is not given until the cancer progresses. Read more about active surveillance

Other treatments

  • Chemotherapy: Medication used to slow the growth of or destroy the cancer which has spread to other areas of the body
  • Hormonal therapy: Reducing male hormones causes most prostate cancer to shrink or regress.

Physician case review

Our multidisciplinary cancer care conferences review complex cases to provide an expert "second opinion" on diagnosis, pre-treatment evaluation, staging, treatment strategy and rehabilitation. The team includes medical oncologists, pathologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, surgeons, nurses, research coordinators and other cancer care staff.
