Biography

Colorectal surgeons address a part of the body that we don’t often discuss outside of a medical or very private environment. The opportunity to provide a safe space for my patients to discuss and address what can be a sensitive set of medical issues is a key reason I decided to become a colorectal surgeon. From the first step of diagnosis, I partner with my patients to better understand their medical problems and identify the best way to get them back to their work, personal and family lives.

I trained with leaders in colon and rectal surgery and gastroenterology at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where I completed a fellowship in colorectal surgery, and in Chicago, where I did my residency in general surgery at the University of Chicago and graduated from Rush Medical College. I learned that maximizing the benefits of surgery results from a patient-centered focus and, when needed, collaborating with other specialists to incorporate surgery into a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. I have found the same commitment to individualized patient care, state-of-the-art techniques, and team-based strategies here at Legacy.

My practice includes the treatment of colon and rectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, as well as anorectal complaints and what is traditionally regarded as Proctology. Although I’m a surgeon, I also place a strong emphasis on prevention and surveillance, through colonoscopy and in some cases, regular office visits. My clinical research focuses on C. difficile colitis, an increasingly common diarrheal colon infection, and finding ways to more effectively predict, treat, and prevent life-threatening infections that might lead to further surgery.
