Transitional Year Residency Program

As an integral member of the housestaff team, the resident develops fundamental clinical skills on the internal medicine and general surgery services. This training is augmented by rotations in outpatient medicine, emergency medicine and three electives. Elective rotations provide the resident with an opportunity to customize the transitional year and build a knowledge base specifically designed to meet his/her future training needs. Nearly 2,000 practicing physicians are members of the Legacy Emanuel and Legacy Good Samaritan medical staff. Between this in-house resource of medical experts and the hospitals' educational affiliation with Oregon Health & Science University, the transitional year resident can pursue elective education in every medical discipline.

Accreditation

The Transitional Year Residency is unique among preliminary year programs. It is the only type of residency specifically accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)  to provide a well-rounded, one-year internship. In accordance with the ACGME requirements, the Legacy Emanuel/Good Samaritan Transitional Year Residency is designed to meet the needs of medical school graduates who:

  • Have chosen a career specialty for which the Transitional Year Residency fulfills a prerequisite.
  • Plan to serve in an organization such as the public health service or on active duty in the military prior to completing a program in graduate medical education.
  • Are required to have at least one year of fundamental clinical training prior to entering a career path which does not require comprehensive clinical skills.
  • Have not yet chosen a career specialty and seek a broad-based year to assist them in making a decision.

The Legacy Transitional Year Residency is fully accredited by the ACGME for eight resident positions. The major sponsor is the Legacy Internal Medicine Residency Program, and secondary sponsorship is provided by the General Surgery Residency.
