Our facilities

The Legacy Research Institute is a 65,000 sq.ft. state-of-the-art research facility where a wide range of clinical, laboratory-based and preclinical research activity is concentrated. The Legacy Central Laboratories for Clinical Chemistry and Toxicology are located at this facility as well.

Administrative Services

Designing, funding, implementing and managing a research project is a complex and time consuming process. Legacy Research Services provides investigators with consultation and the necessary support services, including:

  • Regulatory Compliance Oversight, IRB* and IACUC
  • Legal Review Coordination
  • Financial Management of Grants, Contracts and Sponsored Studies
  • Proposal Development and Medical Writing
  • Peer Review
  • Facilities Support and Management 

*IRB meets twice each month

Comparative Medicine and Pathology

Legacy Research has a comprehensive program of veterinary care in support of the research and teaching activities of Legacy scientists and clinicians. The comparative medicine facility at The Legacy Research Institute encompasses over 8500 square feet. The state-of-the-art unit includes holding and procedure rooms, labs, and quarantine and necropsy facilities. The program is accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC).

Veterinary care includes prevention, diagnosis and treatment of spontaneous and experimentally induced diseases, post-operative care, reviewing research protocols to assure compliance with animal welfare standards, and monitoring the safe use of radioisotopes, hazardous substances, and infectious agents. 

Surgical Facilities - Legacy Institute for Surgical Education and Innovation (LISEI)

The LISEI surgical training center occupies ~ 7,000 sf at the Legacy Research Institute.  The labs and operating rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as harmonic scalpels, intracorporeal ultrasound, C-arms, operating microscopes, complete laparoscopic equipment, and a da Vinci surgical robot.  This realistic training environment provides learners with opportunities to practice a wide range of surgical skills, from site exploration and knot tying to anastomosis and liver resection, as well as OR team training.

The surgical training center includes a multifunctional conference room with advanced audiovisual equipment that facilitate running didactic courses and broadcasting live surgery via an Internet2 connection.  Conference rooms are equipped with ceiling-mounted projectors, built-in DVD players, Internet access, and PC and Apple computers.
