Your doctor (a medical oncologist) will determine your course of chemotherapy (“chemo”) based on the kind of cancer you have and its stage (how much cancer is in your body). It is usually part of a treatment plan that can include surgery, radiation, and/or interventional procedures. Chemo may be used for several reasons:
- To shrink tumors before surgery or radiation
- To help kill any cancer cells that are left after surgery or radiation
- With other treatments if the cancer comes back
