Bike Wheels to Steering Wheels The Bike Wheels to Steering Wheels program engages students in middle school science classes and MESA (Math, Engineering, Science Achievement) clubs with classroom projects that demonstrate the outcome of unsafe behavior. The earth science curriculum unit of this TNTT nurse classroom presentation combines Newton’s Laws of Motion and traffic safety by illustrating what happens when a rapidly moving object (or person) encounters a stationary object. The lesson is illustrated with examples from biking, swimming, diving and motor vehicles. The program also includes a TNTT family traffic safety section that teaches the factors contributing to teenage traffic injuries and fatalities. The program is an excellent way to motivate teens and parents to wear bike and skateboard helmets and teach them safe driving habits. Bike Wheels to Steering Wheels is currently available in middle schools in the Portland Public School District. Based on success outcomes, the science curriculum unit can be utilized in other middle school districts.
