National hospital measures

Hospital Compare is a website created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), along with the Hospital Quality Alliance (HQA) to report the quality of patient care provided by hospitals.

The website reports on quality measures used to evaluate how well hospitals are performing on recommended treatments such as:

  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Pneumonia
  • Surgery
  • Children's asthma

These conditions were chosen because they are among the most common and serious medical conditions seen in hospitals and they allow easy comparisons among healthcare organizations. The measures have gone through years of extensive testing by federal agencies to make sure they are valid and reliable for judging the quality of care hospitals provide.

You can look up the performance of the hospital(s) of your choice by visiting Hospital Compare.
