Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red, 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

Preferred Volume

0.50 mL Serum or Plasma for one allergen, add 0.25 mL Serum or Plasma for each additional allergen ordered

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL Serum or Plasma for one allergen, add 0.10 mL Serum or Plasma for each additional allergen ordered

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient (18-26°C): Unacceptable; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 1 week; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 2 months

Testing Information

Note

Multiple specimen tubes and multiple patient encounters should be avoided.
