Plasma, one 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA) top plastic tube

Outreach clients: Due to short stability and processing requirements for this test, sharing BNP specimen with other testing is not recommended. Please submit one specimen for B-Type Natriuretic Peptide and a second EDTA specimen for other requests.

If two specimens are not submitted, we may need to cancel the BNP test due to specimen stability.

Handling

Centrifuge and separate EDTA plasma from cells within 7 hours of collection. Freeze plasma if testing cannot be performed within 24 hours of collection.
Before testing, allow samples to thaw at room temperature for 30 minutes before testing. Mix well. Thaw samples only once.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL Plasma

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL Plasma (1.2 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C), if transport is delayed longer than 24 hours, plasma should be frozen (≤ -20°C)

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed specimens, specimens collected in tubes other than EDTA plastic tubes, whole blood specimens greater than 7 hours old.

Stability

EDTA WHOLE BLOOD: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 7 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): Unacceptable

EDTA PLASMA: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 7 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 24 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 1 month
