Guidelines

This quantitative test is appropriate for diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring. The BCR-ABL1 major (p210) fusion forms are present in almost all cases of CML and in a small subset of cases of ALL. For further ordering guidelines see ARUP.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Whole Blood, lavender (EDTA) top tube or Bone Marrow in EDTA

Handling

Specimens must be received at ARUP within 48 hours of collection due to lability of RNA.

Preferred Volume

5.0 mL whole blood or 3.0 mL bone marrow

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL whole blood or 1.0 mL bone marrow

Transport

Refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Serum or plasma, specimens collected in preservatives other than EDTA, severely hemolyzed, frozen or clotted whole blood or bone marrow

Stability

Ambient: 1 hour; Refrigerated: 48 hours; Frozen: Unacceptable

Testing Information

Note

This test does not detect the rare BCR-ABL1 micro (p230) fusion form.
For the p190 fusion form (minor breakpoint), order BCR-ABL1, Minor (p190), Quantitative.
