Guidelines

For use with throat source only. Separate orders are available for Culture, Beta Strep, Culture, ThroatCulture, B Pertussis and Culture, Gonorrhea. Positive EIA tests indicate the presence of Strep A antigen from both viable and non-viable organisms.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

With the use of a tongue blade and good light for visualization, swab tonsillar crypts, areas of exudates or inflammation. Do not touch tongue or oral mucosa. Excess blood or mucus on the swab may interfere with test performance and may yield a false positive result. Avoid any bleeding areas.

Collect

Use rayon transport swab containing modified Stuart’s or Amies liquid medium. Kit polyester swab acceptable if test done at collection site.

Handling

Do not use culture swab transport devices containing charcoal or gel. Ideally, the test is performed immediately after collection.
