BILIRUBIN, TOTAL, BODY FLUIDS
Specimen Collection Requirements
Body fluid, one sterile container. Do not use tubes with anti-coagulant. Indicate source of body fluid on the collection container and test request form. If more than one tube is collected, each tube should be labeled with a number indicating the sequence in which it was collected.
Protect specimen from light by wrapping container with foil or other light-opaque material. Specimen may be transferred to an amber screw-cap transport tube as an alternate method of light protection. If cellular material is present, centrifuge specimen and remove supernatant within four hours of collection.
Refrigerated (2-8°C) and protected from light.
Gastric fluids, fluids collected with anti-coagulant, and fluids from sources outside the body will not be accepted.
PROTECTED FROM LIGHT: Ambient (18-26°C): 24 hours, Refrigerated (2-8°C): 3 days, Frozen (≤ -20°C): 1 month
Bilirubin is photosensitive, failure to protect the specimen from light will cause a decrease in measured result.
