Guidelines

CA 19-19 is useful in monitoring pancreatic, hepatobiliary, gastric, hepatocellular and colorectal cancer.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum tubes to clot completely at room temperature (minimum - SST: 30 minutes, red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells ASAP.

Preferred Volume

1.0 mL Serum

Minimum Volume

0.4 mL Serum (1.2 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C), if the specimen will be delayed more than 48 hours, freeze at or below -20°C

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed or plasma specimens, specimens that have undergone more than one freeze-thaw

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 2 months, avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles
