Guidelines

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Preferred: Serum, one 7.0 mL red top tube (no gel)

Also acceptable (if serum/plasma is removed from gel tube within 24 hours of collection): Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes and red top tubes - 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells preferably within 2 hours of collection. Avoid prolonged exposure (greater than 24 hours) to PST or SST tube gel barriers after centrifugation of specimen.

1.0 mL Serum/Plasma

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL Serum/Plasma, (0.60 mL whole blood minimum draw)

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C).

Rejection Criteria

Serum/Plasma exposed to gel barrier (SST and PST) for more than 24 hours, grossly hemolyzed specimens

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM GEL TUBES/CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 7 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 6 months
