Guidelines

Effective August 30, 2016, Legacy Laboratory Services updated reference ranges for serum protein electrophoresis due to an instrumentation change.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, One 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube. Fresh samples are recommended.

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes and red top tubes - 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 4 hours of collection.

2.0 mL Serum

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL Serum (2.4 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Hemolyzed or plasma specimens

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 4 days; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 weeks; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 6 months
