This test is intended as a qualitative fat determination on randomly collected stool. Timed collection with a quantitative fecal fat assessment is required to establish the presence of steatorrhea.
Specimen Collection Requirements
Patient should be on a diet containing at least 60.0 grams of fat. Within 1 week of test, no suppository use, ingestion of dietetic salad dressing, bismuth, Metamucil, castor oil, mineral oil or administration of barium. No cream or ointment applied to perineum at time of collection.
Frozen or preserved specimen
Ambient: 3 hours; Refrigerated: 24 hours
Patients with restricted fat intake may yield false negative results.
