Guidelines

This test is intended as a qualitative fat determination on randomly collected stool. Timed collection with a quantitative fecal fat assessment is required to establish the presence of steatorrhea.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Patient should be on a diet containing at least 60.0 grams of fat. Within 1 week of test, no suppository use, ingestion of dietetic salad dressing, bismuth, Metamucil, castor oil, mineral oil or administration of barium. No cream or ointment applied to perineum at time of collection.

Handling

Collect stool before contact with toilet bowl water, see Specimen Collection-Transport Guide for Stool Orders. Record the time of collection on the order or requisition.
