Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Supply Item Number - 101235 or 101192

Handling

Allow serum tubes to clot completely at room temperature (minimum - SST: 30 minutes, red top tubes: 60 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum from cells within 2 hours of collection.

1.0 mL Serum

Minimum Volume

0.25 mL Serum (0.6 mL minimum whole blood draw)

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C), if the specimen will be delayed more than 48 hours, freeze serum at ≤ -20°C

Rejection Criteria

Grossly hemolyzed or plasma specimens, specimens with microbial contamination

Stability

BEFORE SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 2 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 hours

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 180 days
