Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

No special drug or dietary restrictions. Patients should not collect samples 3 days before, during or three days after their menstrual period, if they have bleeding hemorrhoids, blood in their urine, open cuts on hands or if they have strained during their bowel movement. Roughage in the diet can increase test accuracy by helping uncover silent lesions that bleed intermittently. Patients should closely follow the Patient Instructions with the collection card to assure the most accurate results. Collect

Stool: The Hemoccult ICT Patient Collection card must be used (VIEW COLLECTION CARD)

Handling

Blood degrades rapidly in passes stool, apply passed stool to collection cards promptly per card instructions. Do not collect sample from stool under water. To avoid erroneous results do NOT store stool samples in closed containers that are later transported to the office or lab for application to the cards. Observe Collection Card expiration date.

Fresh or frozen stool or stool in enteric, viral or swab transport vials, stool not placed promptly on collection card, cards not tested within 14 days or held at other than room temperature
