Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 5.0 mL gold (SST), 7.0 mL red, 3.0 mL mint green (lithium heparin, PST), or 4.0 lavender (EDTA) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells within 1 hour of collection.

0.25 mL Serum/Plasma, (Whole Blood 1.0 mL minimum draw)

Rejection Criteria

Serum or Plasma exposed to gel barrier (SST or PST) for more than 24 hours, grossly hemolyzed specimens

SERUM/PLASMA AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient (20-25°C): 24 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 1 week; Frozen (0-20°C): 1 month
WHOLE BLOOD: Ambient (20-25°C): 1 hour; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 1 hour, Frozen (0-20°C): Unacceptable
