Specimen Collection Requirements
BOTH Whole Blood, one dark green (sodium heparin) top tube AND five unfixed, well-made Peripheral Blood Smears.
Peripheral blood smears must be made from sodium heparin tube.
Whole blood must be received within 8 hours of collection. When unfixed smears are submitted, the slides must be received within 24 hours of preparation. The Lab must be able to stain the slides within 72 hours. The Flow Lab is open Monday through Friday 0800-1800. This test cannot be processed on the weekend. Notify the Flow Cytometry Lab at (503) 413-7358 that a specimen is coming.
Room temperature (20-25°C)
EDTA specimens, whole blood more than 12 hours old, blood smears more than 24 hours old, frozen specimens, peripheral blood smears from EDTA specimens, peripheral blood smears from specimens older than 8 hours
WHOLE BLOOD: Ambient: 12 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable BLOOD SMEARS: Ambient: 72 hours
