Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Trough levels are recommended.Reference ranges are based on trough levels.To obtain a trough level, draw specimen just prior to next dose or at least 12 hours after the last dose.

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 7.0 mL red, 4.0 mL dark green (sodium heparin), 4.0 mL lavender (EDTA), or 5.0 mL gold (SST) top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: 30 minutes). Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma within one hour of collection.

1 mL Serum or Plasma

0.25 mL (Whole Blood 1.0 mL minimum draw)

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Mint green (lithium heparin) or grey (sodium fluoroide / potassium oxalate) top tubes, grossly hemolyzed specimens

Stability

WHOLE BLOOD: Ambient (20-25°C): 2 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 hours; Frozen (at or below -20°C): Unacceptable
SERUM OR PLASMA: Ambient (20-25°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 1 week; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 1 year
