MENINGITIS/ENCEPHALITIS PCR PANEL

Mnemonic

CSF MEN PAN

Synonym

ME Panel - ME PCR

Includes

This test detects the following 13 targets: Escherichia coli K1, Haemophilus influenza, Listeria monocytogenes, Neisseria meningitidis, (encapsulated), Streptococcus agalactiae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Cytomegalovirus, Enterovirus, Herpes Simplex Virus 1, Herpes Simplex Virus 2, Human herpesvirus 6, Human parechovirus, Varicella zoster virus, and Cryptococcus neoformans/gattii.

Guidelines

This test must always include a Culture CSF (C CSF).

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) collected via lumbar puncture.

Handling

CSF should not be centrifuged.

Preferred Volume

0.5 mL

Transport

Room temperature or refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Any CSF collected from indwelling medical devices such as a CSF shunt.

Stability

Room Temperature: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 7 days; Frozen: Unacceptable

Testing Information

Performed

7 days a week. 7 a.m. – 10 p.m.

Reported

Same day

Method

Multiplexed Nucleic Acid Amplification Test

Reference Values

Reference Values

Not Detected.

Critical Values

Any positive target on this panel would be considered a Critical Value.

Comments

Some cross reactivity was observed with some of the targets. Interpret with caution. A concurrent CSF culture will be able to differentiate these organisms.

This test is a qualitative test and does not provide a quantitative value for the organism(s) in the specimen.

The performance of this test has not been established for monitoring treatment of infection with any of the panel organisms.

False negative results may occur when the concentration of organism(s) in the specimen is below the device limit of detection. A negative FilmArray ME panel result does not exclude the possibility of CNS infection and should not be used as the sole basis for diagnosis, treatment or other management decisions. Interference from Protein at levels higher than total protein levels in a CSF specimen was observed. Care should be taken in the interpretation of a negative FilmArray ME panel test results from CSF specimens that may contain protein levels >15mg/mL.
