Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Preferred: Plasma AND Serum, one 4.0 mL Lavender (EDTA) AND one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tubes (2 tubes total)

NOTE: EDTA plasma is the preferred specimen for measuring PTHI. If EDTA plasma is submitted, a separate serum specimen is required for testing calcium.

Also acceptable: Serum, one 5.0 mL gold (SST) or 7.0 mL red top tube

Handling

Allow serum to clot completely at room temperature (minimum: SST - 30 minutes and red top tubes - 60 minutes). Centrifuge and remove serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer serum or plasma to a separate labeled aliquot tube. Immediately freeze serum or plasma for transport.

Grossly hemolyzed specimens, specimens that have undergone more than three freeze-thaws

EDTA PLASMA: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 2 days; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 6 months

SERUM: Room Temperature (18-26°C): 4 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 8 hours; Frozen (≤ -20°C): 6 months
