Guidelines

Parvovirus B19 causes an acute illness from which patients recover spontaneously and confers protective, lifelong immunity. Complications can occur in chronic thrombocytopenia, anemia in immunocompromised patients and fetal infection in pregnant women.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one gold (SST) top tube, also acceptable Plasma: lavender (EDTA) or green (sodium or lithium heparin) top tube

Handling

Separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP. Parallel testing is preferred and convalescent specimens must be received within 30 days from receipt of the acute specimens. Please mark specimen plainly as Acute or Convalescent.

0.5 mL

Minimum Volume

0.3 mL

Refrigerated (2-8°C)

Rejection Criteria

Heat-inactivated, hyperlipemic, icteric, hemolyzed or contaminated serum specimens

Stability

AFTER SEPARATION FROM CELLS: Ambient: 2 days; Refrigerated: 2 weeks; Frozen: 1 year, avoid repeated freeze/thaw cycles
