Guidelines

Most appropriate for AIDS patients or patients that are otherwise immune-compromised.

Induced sputum: Induced sputum collection should only be performed under close medical supervision and using strict infection control procedures. Patients requiring induced sputum collection should be referred to a pulmonary clinic.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Bronchial washings, bronchial alveolar lavage (BAL) or induced sputum

Handling

Specimen in sterile container at 2-8°C. Submit ASAP to Microbiology. Contact Pathology or Cytology for GMS (Silver Stain) on tissue samples.

Preferred Volume

5.0 mL respiratory secretions

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL respiratory secretions

Transport

Sterile container in sealed plastic bag at 2-8°C

Rejection Criteria

Formalinized or frozen specimens

Stability

Ambient: 2 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: Unacceptable
