Guidelines

Most appropriate to expedite isolation decision on known or suspected TB patient. This test does not include an AFB culture.

The sensitivity of this smear is lower than that of culture methods, and should not be used in place of culture, but as an adjunct to culture. The sensitivity of this test is also lower than that of MTB PCR testing.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

First morning sputum or gastric secretions

Handling

Place specimen in a sterile container in a sealed plastic bag.

Preferred Volume

5.0-10.0 mL

Minimum Volume

1.0 mL

Transport

Refrigerated 2-8°C in a sealed plastic bag

Rejection Criteria

Less than acceptable volume

Stability

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 1 week; Frozen: 2 weeks

Comments
