Guidelines

For vaginosis/vaginitis. Other tests available: Vaginal Pathogens DNA Probe, Trichomonas Antigen, Culture, Genital .

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

If speculum is used, do not use lubricant.

Collect

Aspirate Vaginal secretions, or use swab, place in sterile tube with 0.5 mL saline

Handling

Must be received in laboratory within 1 hour for Trichomonas viability. If delay is unavoidable, also order the Trichomonas Antigen.

Minimum Volume

1 swab in 0.5 mL preservative free saline

Transport

Room temperature, STAT

Rejection Criteria

Frozen or refrigerated specimen, leaking or nonsterile container

Ambient: 1 hour
