Specimen Collection Requirements
Have patient thoroughly rinse the mouth with water.
The patient is asked to cough deeply from the diaphragm and expectorate sputum into a properly labeled sterile container with a lid such as a sputum collection cup or a sterile urine container.
A fresh and unfixed sample is optimal. If delay is unavoidable the specimen should be refrigerated.
