Guidelines

This is a rapid assay for the detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae antigen in the urine of patients with pneumonia. It is intended, in conjunction with culture and other methods, to aid in the diagnosis of pneumococcal pneumonia.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Random Urine, collect in sterile leak proof container

Handling

Mix urine well before submitting an aliquot.

Urine with any preservative other than Boric Acid, urine past stability

Comments

A negative test does not exclude infection with Streptococcus pneumoniae.  Test sensitivity 73% as determined by LHS, specificity 94%.

This test has not been evaluated on patients taking antibiotics for more than 24 hours or on patients who have recently completed an antibiotic regime.  Streptococcus pneumoniae vaccine may cause false positive results.  It is not recommended that this test be done within 5 days of receiving the vaccine.  The accuracy of this test has not been proven in young children.
