Guidelines

This test is designed to measure sulfamethoxazole and sulfisoxazole. Peak sulfonamide (total) blood levels of 5-15 mg/dL may be effective for most infections, with concentrations of 12-15 mg/dL being optimal for serious infections. Sulfonamide levels should not exceed 20 mg/dL.

Indicate on the order or requisition which sulfa drug is being administered.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Patient Preparation

Draw peak specimen 2 hours post dose.

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one plain red, lavender (EDTA), green (sodium or lithium heparin) or gray (sodium fluoride/postassium oxalate) top tube, also acceptable, avoid if possible: Gold (SST) or green (PST) top tube, follow handling instructions.

Handling

Separate serum or plasma from cells within 2 hours of collection. Transfer 1 mL serum or plasma to an aliquot tube.

1.0 mL

Rejection Criteria

Citrated plasma, tubes that contain liquid anticoagulant.
