Guidelines

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum or Plasma, one 7 mL red or 4 mL lavender (K2EDTA or K3EDTA) top tube. SST and PST tubes are NOT acceptable.

Handling

Centrifuge and separate serum or plasma from cells ASAP.

Preferred Volume

1 mL Serum or Plasma

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL (Whole blood minimum draw 1.3 mL)

Refrigerated

Rejection Criteria

Whole blood. Gel Separator Tubes, Light Blue (Sodium Citrate), or Yellow (SPS or ACD Solution). 

Stability

Ambient (20-25°C): 5 days; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 5 days; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 5 days

Therapeutic monitoring in patients receiving sodium nitroprusside therapy. Screen for thiocyanate poisoning.
