Severe infections may occur in immunocompromised patients. Congenital Toxoplasmosis may present risk to the fetus.

Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one gold (SST) top tube

Handling

Allow blood to clot, centrifuge, remove serum immediately and pour into a plastic tube.

Lipemic, icteric or hemolyzed samples, plasma

Comments

Positive:  Toxoplasma gondi IgG antibody detected, consistent with current or past infection.
Negative:  No Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibody detected.  If early disease is suspected, repeat testing in 4-6 weeks may be helpful.
Equivocal:  Equivocal result.  Repeat testing in 14 days may be helpful.
