Guidelines

For vaginosis/vaginitis. Does not differentiate between viable and non-viable organisms. Other tests available: Vaginal Pathogens DNA Probe, Wet Mount and Trichomonas Vaginalis by PCR.

This Trichomonas antigen (EIA) test is not validated for any male sources. For males, we have the following tests available: Wet Mount or the Trichomonas Vaginalis by PCR.

Do not use vaginal lubricants.

Handling

Aspirate vaginal secretions, or use swab, place in sterile tube with 0.5 mL saline, also acceptable, BBL culture swab with Stuarts transport

Minimum Volume

1 swab in 0.5 mL preservative free saline, 1 BBL culture swab in Stuart’s transport

Frozen specimen, leaking or nonsterile container, specimens from males

Comments

This test is more sensitive for Trichomonas than the Wet Mount or Vaginal Pathogens DNA Probe in validation studies.  Can be used in conjunction with Wet Mount for better sensitivity in detecting Trichomonas vaginalis.
