Specimen Collection Requirements

Collect

Serum, one gold (SST) top tube

Handling

Allow blood to clot, centrifuge, remove serum immediately and pour into a plastic tube.

Preferred Volume

2.0 mL

Minimum Volume

0.5 mL

Transport

Refrigerated (2-8°C). If the specimen will be delayed more than 48 hours, then freeze at or below -20°C.

Rejection Criteria

Plasma or heat-inactivated, icteric or contaminated serum

Stability

Ambient (20-25°C): 8 hours; Refrigerated (2-8°C): 48 hours; Frozen (at or below -20°C): 2 months

Comments

Positive:  Varicella-Zoster virus IgG detected, consistent with prior exposure/past infection.  Patients positive for Varicella-Zoster virus IgG antibody are presumed immune to primary infection.

Negative:  No Varicella-Zoster virus IgG antibody detected.  Patient presumed susceptible to primary infection.  If early primary infection is suspected, repeat testing in 14 days may be helpful.

Equivocal:  Equivocal result.  Repeat testing in 14 days may be helpful.
