Research shows that patient outcomes and safety improve when providers and health care delivery systems use practical health literacy communication tools with patients. Nearly half of the U.S. adult population has trouble reading, understanding and making use of basic health information.

Legacy Health is leading a region-wide initiative to enhance health literacy communication skills for medical and health care providers. It is sponsoring a second Oregon and SW Washington Health Literacy Conference, Toward a Culture of Clarity, on March 1, 2013 in Portland.

This conference will provide skill-based training using four health literacy tools: universal precautions, plain language, teach back and encouraging questions.

The conference will feature distinguished national and local experts, including Howard Koh, M.D., assistant secretary for health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; Dean Schillinger, M.D., University of California, San Francisco; and Clifford Coleman, M.D., OHSU.
