Abiomed device now assisting cardiac treatment

June 2013

Legacy Emanuel Medical Center now has a cardiac assist technology called an Impella 2.5 device from Abiomed. It is used to support left ventricular function during high-risk coronary interventions and for patients with shock.

Peter F. Banitt, M.D., with Pacific Heart Associates, reports that using the device helped to provide a margin of safety when performing a coronary stent procedure.

How the Impella 2.5 works

The Abiomed Impella 2.5 pulls blood from the left ventricle through an inlet area near the tip and expels blood from the catheter into the ascending aorta.

The pump can be inserted via a standard catheterization procedure through the femoral artery, into the ascending aorta, across the valve and into the left ventricle.
