Broadway Clinic's early experience with Carequality

A few months ago we shared information about Carequality, a national Health Information Exchange (HIE) that is able to help connect and send patient care information between EHR vendors, HIEs, payers and other organizations electronically. There are now 15 LHP practices that have connected to Carequality. When fully operational, these connections will improve data exchange between LHP members and improve the care experience for our patients.

Broadway Clinic in NE Portland is one of the newest practices to go live. Heather Bardfield, R.N., is a new member of the LHP Data & Systems Committee. She led Broadway Clinic’s effort to join Carequality. “We wanted to improve our population health efforts, like closing care gaps,” said Bardfield. An additional motivation was to be prepared for the alternative care models. “Our practice has been chosen to participate in CPC+, so it’s important for us to be able to share clinical data when and where it’s required. I think it’s important for practices to remain flexible and adaptable to new technologies that support their efforts within the changing health care landscape, particularly reimbursement reform.”

Broadway Clinic’s story is particularly inspiring because they are the first NextGen customer in the region to go live with Carequality. Early in 2016, LHP staff and many LHP practices on NextGen reached out to the EMR vendor to let them know they were interested in sharing data via Carequality. At that time, NextGen had no plans to expand their pilot in St. Louis. However, after requests from multiple LHP members and LHP’s Epic partners, NextGen decided to expand their scope to include the Pacific Northwest.

“It proves that when you work together, you have a louder voice. LHP was instrumental in helping make this happen,” said Bardfield.

Financial subsidy criteria

LHP is offering financial assistance to set up a connection to Carequality if a practice meets the following criteria:
  • Current EMR vendor is eClinicalWorks, GE Centricity, Greenway, or NextGen. (These EMRs cover over 80% of our Primary Care Providers in the network and were selected by the LHP Data and Systems Committee. If you aren’t on one of these EMRs, you can still inquire about connecting to Carequality with your vendor to begin exchanging information.)
  • Practice specialty is Internal Medicine, Family Medicine or Pediatric Primary Care Medicine.

LHP will cover the cost the practice’s EMR vendor charges to connect to Carequality, not to exceed $5,000. Some vendors set up the connection at no cost at all.

Interested in connecting?
Talk to your EMR vendor and let them know you want to connect your site to Carequality.
