Greetings to the LHP community. Thank you all for such a warm welcome to a new transplant from the east coast!  It has been a pleasure to start getting to know you all, and I look forward to continuing to meet everyone involved in the network.

Arriving in Portland earlier this summer after a cross-country road trip with my two teenage children and our dog (my wife made the smart decision and flew with the cat), we are getting settled in our new environment and exploring our new home. My first few weeks at LHP have been filled with introductions, and learning about the local environment and culture. I have been thoroughly impressed with the engagement of all the providers I have met, and the high level of performance of all the team members involved with LHP.
 
Working in health care is a wonderful, rewarding calling, but there are also challenges related to the complex systems that we work within. The historical fee-for service incentives have created pressures and systems that sometimes make it hard to always deliver the care we would like to. As health care moves away from fee-for-service and toward value-based incentive models, building capability for high quality, efficient, and well-coordinated care is essential.
  
From the perspective of coming from a health system that has been involved in risk contracts for the last 10 years, including a NextGen ACO contract with Medicare, it is clear that LHP is well positioned to succeed in these sorts of value based arrangement. The commitment toward success is evident, as well as the excellent work on data and clinical interconnectivity.

As a practicing primary care provider, I have always been interested in looking at communication opportunities between PCPs, specialists, hospitalists, and the ED. In our day-to-day practice, there are opportunities where improved collaboration would help patient outcomes and be a more satisfying experience for both patients and providers. In my role at LHP, I will also be involved in promoting use of evidence-based guidelines and developing systems to support providers in improving quality outcomes.

In the next few weeks I will be joining the Field Operations Team on their site visits, and I am eager to meet you all in the coming months. Thank you again for helping me feel so welcome here and hope to see you soon!
